Eternity II is a famous edge-matching puzzle: 256 unique pieces must form a single 16 × 16 board. The number of possible arrangements is immense. Finding a better board takes persistence, mathematics, and a community willing to search together.
We are building an open community effort to push the best known Eternity II score further. Every matching edge matters. A board with 467 matched edges or more would be a major milestone, and every computer can help explore the enormous space between today’s best candidates and that next discovery.
BOINC gives your computer a small, independent part of the search. You choose how much CPU time it may use.
The Eternity II solver applies the project’s optimized search methods to test promising arrangements and prune impossible branches.
Completed work returns to the project, where results are checked and strong boards become part of the collective progress.
This is a puzzle with a real frontier. Your computer is not running a demonstration: it is searching territory that may never have been examined before. A few spare CPU cores at home, combined with thousands of hours from other volunteers, can reveal the next record.
Participation is free. BOINC runs in the background and lets you set its CPU and schedule limits. You can pause or leave at any time.
Your first completed task could be the one that moves the record.
Eternity II is a volunteer project. We publish progress through the project pages and message boards, welcome useful ideas, and keep improving the solver as the search teaches us more about the puzzle.
